What is Harmonic Drift?
Harmonic Drift is an immersive sensory experience of original musical instruments and shadow puppet theater. Our goal is to bring joy to audiences through direct participation with our instrument installation and through immersive performances of sound, shadows, and story.
Anywhere you can find Harmonic Drift, you can participate with us. We aspire to bring out everyone’s inner child, whether it’s through playful and joyous exploration on our pantheon of instruments or through zany stories of mythical creatures in our original shadow puppet theater production, “Wayang Earth?!”

What is Wayang Earth?!
Step into a world of magic and myth in "Wayang Earth?!," a zany shadow theater experience of mythical dual creatures grappling with extraordinary challenges in a fantastical realm. Inspired by Balinese traditional shadow theater (wayang kulit), “Wayang Earth?!” features over twenty intricately designed stick puppets with a wide range of character voices, all operated by solo puppeteer, Katie Harrell. Accompanying the play are the otherworldly sounds of gongs, bells, and found object instruments by the crew of Harmonic Drift, creating an immersive sensory experience that transcends the ordinary.
“Wayang Earth?!” is a family-friendly production. Audiences are invited to explore the puppets and instruments following the show.

Dan Bales is the visionary artist behind Harmonic Drift, a captivating mobile sound art installation that merges homemade instruments and found-object creations into a mesmerizing symphony, all underpinned by the enchanting tunings of Balinese gamelan. A true renaissance man, Dan wears multiple hats as an instrument builder, composer, musician, and an all-around creative extraordinaire, committed to sharing the transformative power of music with all walks of life. His passion lies in the realm of improvised music, where he uncovers the boundless joy that arises from the act of collective creation.

Katie Harrell
DIRECTOR, WAYANG EARTH?!
Katie Harrell is a multifaceted artist and musician whose creative journey has been profoundly shaped by her deep immersion in Balinese music, dance, and shadow puppetry. Katie's artistic odyssey into shadow puppetry began as a Fulbright Researcher in Bali, immersed in the study of traditional Balinese vocal music, where she was introduced to the rich vocal music tradition of traditional Balinese shadow theater. Katie’s many other talents shine through in “Wayang Earth?!,” such as her love for storytelling, improvization, voice acting, comedy, and graphic design.
